The Senate has passed a tax bill saving more than 20 million taxpayers from the bite of the alternative minimum tax.

The vote Tuesday was 93-2.

The one-year reprieve for people exposed to the AMT was part of a giant tax package that also provides tax breaks for those investing in and using renewable energy resources.

It renews dozens of short-term tax breaks that businesses and families have come to rely on. They include the research and development tax credit and relief for those with college tuition costs.

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The Senate on Tuesday took up a giant tax package that saves more than 20 million taxpayers from the bite of the alternative minimum tax, nudges the nation toward greater use of solar, wind and other renewable energy resources, and extends relief for disaster victims.
