Jetsgo opts for digEplayer handheld IFE (new airline mentioned in text)
May 27, 2004 - CANADIAN low-cost operator Jetsgo has become the second airline to commit to the APS digEplayer handheld IFE system.
digEplayer is already in service with launch customer Alaska Airlines. It has also been trialled by Hawaiian Airlines and United low-cost carrier Ted, and is currently being tried out by new UK transatlantic airline BluArrow.
Designed to hold more than 30 feature-length films and 10 hours of music, digiEplayer is the brainchild of former Alaska baggage handler Bill Boyer, who teamed his APS start-up in Seattle with technology company e.Digital of San Diego to develop the notebook-sized device.
Jetsgo plans to make the units available on flights of three hours or more, from Toronto to Victoria, Vancouver, Abbotsford, Edmonton, Calgary, St John's, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Florida. Passengers will be able to rent a digEplayer for $10. Forty units will be available on each of Jetsgo’s MD-83s and Fokker 100s from July.
Films from Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox will be made available one month ahead of store rentals and refreshed every 60 days. Additional studios are to be announced.
