IBM, Sony, Tosh team up to fight MS

Playstation III versus Xbox2 battle starts
By Mike Magee, 02/04/2002 08:47:43 BST
THE FINANCIAL TIMES reports today that Big Blue will firm up its deal with Sony and announce a relationship with Toshiba to help it fight a battle to win hearts and the contents of wallets in the consumer market.
According to the newspaper, the three majors will pour millions of dollars into the alliance to produce four systems on one chip, hoping it will reap billions as a result.
We and other electronics titles reported some weeks and months ago that Sony and IBM were cooperating together on, for example, the PlayStation III, but IBM has now firmed up those details.
Any chip(s) developed will find their way into consoles, servers, game machines, networks and PDAs, and the companies aim is to produce very low power consumption semiconductors.
Big Blue will put around 400 people into the project, while Sony and Tosh will contribute around 100 people, based at its top fab in East Fishkill.
The first products are due next year. But IBM had better watch it, because as our own Eva Glass said a few weeks back, Microsoft has its own cunning plans too.
And in a head-to-head fight with Microsoft, Big Blue has always, so far, been bested. µ
