That's entertainment, 2001: The new moguls

Napster's rise, AOL/Time Warner's merger, the demise of Pop.com and DEN, and the decline of the broader tech sector have caused even the biggest and most-popular Web entertainment hopefuls to gasp. While 2000 started with the big and fanciful dreams of startups wresting audiences from powerful media giants, it ends with the sense that big-media executives still hold all the best marbles. Looking back over 2000's carnage, it seems that no matter how laboriously they move, no matter how profound their Ludditism, it is those marble-holding executives, and their major media companies, that will end up winning the game and benefiting most from digital media.

Startups, of course, can always exploit the voids left by plodding giants, but they will have to be far more careful about it going forward. Red Herring queried media executives, industry insiders, and venture capitalists about what to expect in 2001. Many dodged the question, with at least one well-known Hollywood pundit saying he was unwilling to express a viewpoint for fear of sounding absolutely clueless.
