I couldnt agree more on the whole 9th ward deal. They should either let it become a lagoon as it undoubtedly was originally, or fill it in before rebuilding.
What's really needed is to restore the Cyprus forests, mangroves and wetlands that used to protect from the surge/wave action and even a certain amount of wind that used to exist outside the mouth of the Big Muddy.
Interestingly enough, I saw a thing on Discovery channel I think it was, where they've developed a method of mass planting via air drop of baseball sized packages of dirt and a plant start, all encased in wax and designed to land in the correct position and break open in such a way that the plant survives and "plants" itself.
They're working on many varieties for many climate types including deserts, wetlands and even forests. It seems so simple that it's one of those ideas that makes you wonder why it took us so long to think of it.
