Imagine that you know big news is coming, say next Monday. And you happen to have a few hundred thousand dollars burning a hole in your pocket. You know about the news a week ahead of time, so you start accumulating slowly at first. But once the volume picks up, so does the price. You get a bit nervous mid-week, so you start buying more aggressively for a couple days. Coming to Friday, you're paying more than you'd like, so you back off and let a natural pullback happen as flippers take profits. This also allows you to accumulate a fair bit more at a lower price.
