I won't say GW wasn't a spender. I've posted that several times. He did cut taxes and help boost the economy. Here's unemployment rates from the beginning of Clinton's term and Bush's. Pretty impressive, eh?:

Regarding surplus, yes, Clinton handed off a surplus but also higher taxes. How do you think those higher taxes would have an effect on the economy if they were still at those levels today? I'll agree all day we have to cut spending to reduce the deficit. Raising taxes is a quick fix on the books but a long term drag on the economy.
