Maybe some of us are too young to remember, but the evangelical support in the 80’s helped elect Reagan. We cannot dismiss the faith-based religious denominations of this country, for it was these groups of people who helped establish The United States of America. There was a time when asserting that you were religious was acceptable, most Americans attended church on Sunday. As the pendulum swings to the left and we live to experience the 21st century, the truth and manifestation of our religious or non-religious beliefs has erupted into debates like we had tonight where evangelicals are claiming religious persecution and non-believers are being forced to hear issues that are not of their own concern. I admire both candidates for taking on an unpopular debate. When it boils down to it, the theme of ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ is too often translated to mean ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of all who threaten it’. In a dynamic country as the United States, being tolerant and respecting differing opinions will never please all, but our constitutional right in a civilized country at least allows us to sleep at night without fear of civil war – for the moment. If there was enough time prior to the election, it would benefit many for the candidates to entertain debates of multiple venues. Every American should feel as though they have a voice in the political decision making process.
