What you're missing is the "Why?"
Why were they abandoned?
Why were they not produced?
WERE they ever produced and what did they produce, and if so, Why did they stop?
You're assuming that the answers are bad.
30 years ago, they lacked a lot of the technology they have now... they lacked a lot of the know-how specific to SE Kansas... value was determined in different ways and oil and gas were not necessarily evaluated the same way then.
60 years ago they could have had a monster well less than a mile away, but it's been so long now that the effects on the area from that production have already been negated by nature.
Are you sure there's nothing to be optimistic about?
