SR LTD > What is Uranium?

Uranium is a dense metal and an abundant source of concentrated energy. It’s the only source of nuclear power—providing fuel to the 450 reactors in operation worldwide, producing 16% of global electricity. In total, these generators consume 160 million pounds of uranium each year.

Fact: When uranium replaces coal as an energy source, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced. Every 22 tons of uranium (U 3O8), which is used instead of coal, reduces about one million tons of CO 2 emissions.

Gas emmissions from electricity
Uranium occurs naturally in low levels in rock, soil and water, and is always combined with other elements. It is the highest-numbered element found naturally in significant quantities. Its average concentration in the Earth's crust is four parts per million—about 40 times as abundant as silver.

Because uranium is so dense, it is also used in the keels of yachts, as counterweights for aircraft control surfaces (like rudders) and also for radiation shielding.
