Insignia Chosen by Microsoft for Strategic Alliance; Insignia Invited toJoin Microsoft's Mobility Partner Advisory Council
SAN FRANCISCO, Mar 25, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Insignia Solutions(R) (Nasdaq:INSG), the leading provider of Java-enabling software for the mobile market, today announced its participation in the Microsoft Mobility Partner Advisory Council (MPAC). Microsoft Corp. formed the council in an effort to bring the most innovative and successful solutions to market with like-minded companies investing heavily in mobility.

Insignia's Jeode platform has become the de facto Java-enabling software for a variety of Pocket PC based PDAs including those from Compaq, Samsung, and NEC. Insignia's forthcoming mobile provisioning-infrastructure software will enable Microsoft Smartphone 2002 software-based mobile phones and wireless personal digital assistants (PDAs) to download and run Java(TM)2, Micro Edition (J2ME) mobile services, including games, mobile commerce, business to business applications, email, and personal management software.

"Microsoft's success rests in large part on the shoulders of its industry partners," said Mary Rose Becker, group marketing manager for the Mobility Group at Microsoft. "Microsoft is a better company when those partners attain their goals. We're excited that Insignia is aligning with us in an effort to reach our common objectives and ultimately provide great products."

"Insignia has a long history of close collaboration with leading mobile technology companies," said Peter Baldwin, executive vice president of operations at Insignia Solutions. "Working with Microsoft reinforces our value as an essential ingredient in the burgeoning mobile market."

The combined PDA, smartphone, and mobile handset segment is the fastest growing market for smart devices. Last year in Japan alone, over 10 million users switched to Java enabled phones to access a variety of sophisticated services, from location based travel assistance to interactive entertainment. The latest ARC Group market research study highlights that all mobile handsets will be Java enabled within five years. This study estimates that 1.1 billion will be capable of running Java applications by 2006.
