They're using all available company resources to pinpoint the mineral veins in the Comstock so that they're able to mine most efficiently. If they just started mining like before without any plan, they could be missing some of the most profitable areas, including bonanza formations (which is discussed by Jim Golden at the Red Chip conference). Historically, this is what the Comstock is known for and made many fortunes.
