Ethnicity most certainly is a social construct. Visibly apparent race is a small part of it, but it's based also on mannerism, dress, language/accent, and religious/social customs. Ethnicity is about the judgements people make based on what they see in others and themselves, and practically nothing about DNA (as witness the African-American fellow who turned out to have no African DNA).

Genetics can distinguish genetic groups, not ethnic groups. Nth-generation immigrants who have assimilated into a new culture whose people look basically the same are largely considered part of that ethnicity regardless of their actual BGA. Discovery of varying BGAs within apparently homogeneous ethnic groups is one of the cooler possibilities in all this....
