You stated it exactly correctly clawmann....

... what's termed 'Gap & Go' news can certainly negate what often happens in filling gaps. All kinds of charts are full of such instances of 'gap & go' news.

Generally speaking though , in the absence of such , gaps 'fill' far more often than they don't.

I once heard a really good explanation of the actual market mechanics which cause gaps to fill but for the life of me I can't remember it.

Penny stocks are rife with manipulated 'gaps up' which nearly invariably fill , leaving 'bagholders' who bought above the gaps.

Here's a good example of a more solid stock , our new 'friends' over at Apple. Note some of the early gaps up which never filled. It would be interesting to see what , if any , news caused those. You can also see some gaps which did fill. Again , it would be interesting to see what caused those gaps.
