luvhuntin, you are confusing shorts with daytraders. Shorts are short sellers, who borrow stock and sell it at market...they then wait for the price to go down to "cover" the short. (ie./ Buy it back.) But if the company goes under, they don't have to cover the short and they keep everything.

People who bash stocks are often thought to be short.
