Well that's how things have turned out. They were not pre-ordained that way. For instance, directing attention and product to Dell at expense of white box makers was an example of a poor decision that did not need to be made that way. Also going out to chartered to produce low bin desktop parts that were then dumped at a loss just to gain profitless market share was another unnecessary adventure. Then of course the ATI debacle. AMD wasted its time and resources, and just fell behind in all areas.

So yes, you are right. A appearances are that AMD has no advantage in any market at this time. But that is because they had chosen their prime objective to be reducing Intel's revenue instead of cementing their advantage with their existing customers. If they had served their natural market (white box makers), and concentrated on the expanding notebook market, they might still be viable. They likely lost the server market due to distractions that resulted in the Barc fiasco.

AMD chose to adopt Frank Sinatra's song lyric; "All or nothing at all". And they ended with nothing.

Anyway, this is just post-mortem. Maybe there is a lesson in this for Via.
