Outside of the actual "logging" of the hole that is typically done after the TD is reached (there are other ways to do it while drilling but this is usually done on directional well bores & is very expensive), They take samples of the drilling fluids returning from the well bore and test the solids and gases, i.e. "mud Logging". They know what they are drilling through at almost all times. Pressure indicators will also signal bottom-whole conditions.

If they said they are getting what they expected, it is a very good sign they will make they well we are after. IMO!
