QUALCOMM Expands Its WCDMA (UMTS) Customer Base
Thursday May 13, 7:31 am ET
- Increased Demand for WCDMA (UMTS) Supported by 21 Wireless Manufacturers Worldwide -

SAN DIEGO, May 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - News), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that 21 wireless device manufacturers have selected QUALCOMM's integrated chipsets and system software for their WCDMA (UMTS) deployments. This is the largest customer base in the industry to work with a single WCDMA (UMTS) wireless chipset provider. Leading global manufacturers, including new entrants BenQ Corporation, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Pantech & Curitel, and Vitelcom Mobile Technology, today joined the previously announced Hisense Group Co. Ltd., Huawei Technologies, Co. Ltd., LG Electronics, Inc., Novatel Wireless, Option NV, Samsung, Sanyo Electric, Sierra Wireless, Inc., Toshiba and ZTE Corporation in selecting QUALCOMM's MSM6200(TM) and/or MSM6250(TM) Mobile Station Modem(TM) (MSM(TM)) chipset solutions to support commercial WCDMA (UMTS) network deployments throughout China, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States.

"We expect global adoption of WCDMA (UMTS) to accelerate as our customer base brings new products to market," said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "QUALCOMM's extensive interoperability testing, in addition to the testing we've conducted with our WCDMA (UMTS) operator partners, provides our handset customers with the confidence that their development efforts can remain focused on quickly addressing new market opportunities."

QUALCOMM offers complete WCDMA (UMTS) chipset and system software solutions. The MSM6200 chipset is QUALCOMM's second-generation WCDMA (UMTS) solution and supports entry-level voice and basic data applications. QUALCOMM's MSM6250 chipset, designed to be compatible with all GSM, GPRS and WCDMA (UMTS) networks worldwide, enables the development of multimedia and position location handsets to appeal to mainstream wireless consumers. QUALCOMM's MSM6225(TM) solution supports data-centric and entry-level handsets. The recently announced MSM6280(TM) and the MSM6275(TM) solution enable high-performance, multimedia-rich devices. QUALCOMM also announced this week the MSM7200(TM) chipset solution for converged WCDMA (UMTS) devices. QUALCOMM's WCDMA (UMTS) solutions capture the full breadth of voice and multimedia segments emerging in the WCDMA (UMTS) wireless market.

QUALCOMM's WCDMA (UMTS) chipset solutions support the Launchpad(TM) suite of advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage functionality, as well as QUALCOMM's BREW(TM) solution. The BREW system enables the development and monetization of advanced applications and content, allowing operators and OEMs to differentiate their products and services and increase revenues. These chipsets are also compatible with the Java(TM) runtime environment; J2ME(TM) can be built entirely on the chipset as an extension to the BREW solution.

Like all members of the MSM6xxx family, the MSM6200, MSM6225, MSM6250 and MSM6275 solutions incorporate QUALCOMM's radioOne(TM) Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF) architecture, which eliminates the need for Intermediate Frequency (IF) components.
