Intel Banias, Tablet PCs and timings

Sooner than we all expect

WHILE SENIOR STAFF at Intel describe Mike Mageek's stories on the Banias microprocessor when he was at its Developer Forum as "fishing expeditions", it looks like he might have emulated his hero Dr Craig Barrett and made a huge catch with some elements of his story at least.
Because I'm still hearing from my boyfriends at the corporation that one of the first uses that Banias will be put to is a Tablet PC and a Japanese OEM wants to be the first off the block with the product.
This is quite interesting and chimes with other things I heard in the back lot the other week - including that the Banias may be based on a Pentium 4 core and that Intel will manage to bang one into shape earlier than most people, but not my boyfriend, expected.
Can it really be possible that Intel will introduce a Banias when the Tablet PCs are launched, I asked him. He said: "Yes".

More datapoints that INTC is scraping the idea of building the new Banias low energy chip from the ground up in favor of rushing something to market based on existing architecture, and in time for the roll-out of Tablet PCs. Why the rush?

regards, wsh
