HISTORICAL DOW RETURNS:

I hadn't done this in a long time, so I went back and determined the annualized return for the DOW for each year back to 1987. After that, I went back by decade to 100 years. This is all based on closing prices on June 26 of each year.

The DOW is -14.1% in the past year. Just as bad, IMO, although it is not shown, the DOW is -2.29% (annualized -.28%) since the high on January 14, 2000.

Also, the DOW is +5.0% annualized in exactly 100 years.

I recall when it was common place to refer to the DOW as historically producing 10-12% returns on average. Clearly, that is nowhere near true anymore.
