More evidence that Iraq is mainly about oil:

Incidentally, it is somewhat sobering to apply some historical perspective to the present world energy and food situation:

Already, about 200 years ago, Thomas Malthus pointed out the tendency of population growth to outpace the production of food. Though temporarily falsified by the one-time fossil fuel bonanza and derided by main-stream economists, he is ultimately being proved correct as is becoming daily more obvious.

In 1848, John Stuart Mill questioned what would happen when economic growth, as it inevitably must, comes to an end.
More recently, in his 1912 book, Matter and Energy, the English Nobel prize chemist, Frederick Soddy, compared natural energy flows with reliance on fossil fuels: "The one is like spending the interest on a legacy and the other is like spending the legacy itself". He also recognized that there would be "a period of reflection in which awkward interviews between civilization and its banker are in prospect". That says it about as well as I know how. (The quotations from Soddy are taken from the recently published Energy in Nature and Society by Vaclav Smil). If you want to read the original, a PDF copy of the entire Soddy book is available on the web by googling Soddy Matter Energy.
Since then there has been a steadily increasing flow of reports, articles, speeches and books spelling out the facts and raising warnings.

It has taken us 200 years to begin to recognize our true predicament. Most of the world still does not have a clue. Most of the people who are screaming for action, including the major environmental movements, seem to think that with a few tweaks and some minor belt tightening we can have a better world, a harmonious Utopia. I wish I could agree. Exactly how or how fast it will play out I cannot predict but it won't be pretty!
