the mayor has to put on some kind of perforamnce to appease his constituents- to show he's following through on a campaign promise. unfortunately, like most campaign promises, it has no basis in reality (economic, legal, or political). his and the communitiy's voice deserves to be heard, however, like someone else mentioned the other day, this town doesn't have a pot to piss in. the aesthetic basis of the argument is weak at best. the stack has been there for decades. its part of the city's history. it used to provide jobs. get over it. any claims the stack will be "spewing" "smelly pollutants" can be easily be disproved with science.
