I sent a message to Dr. Womac today asking if he still considered the KDS a viable player in the processing of cellulosic biomass.

Dr. Womac is from U. of Tennessee and has been involved with FASC on a project investigating the processing of cellulosic biomass. Read more about it by following links in the iBox.

Here is his much appreciated rapid response:

KDS is very viable because additional cellulosic-Et-OH conversion data support “finer” particle sizes to reduce residence time in mixture, vat size, and footprint of plant. Conversion companies have been slow to address in-feed side of plant because of pre-occupation with the heart of conversion.

There is also evidence to consider in-field coarse chopped material – thereby there is potential to move away from baled format. Chopped material would feed directly to KDS or similar fine grind stage.
