USA/GULF OF MEXICO: Deep Down has delivered a Proteus Active Heave Compensation Unit for Schlumberger, to be used in the Gulf of Mexico. The system is designed to maintain vertical displacement of subsea payloads to within sixteenths of an inch even if the surface vessel is experiencing a heave of up to 30 feet (9.1 m).

The control system monitors vertical motion and compensates by releasing and retrieving the main winch to keep the payload steady. The software allows it to respond to changes in vertical motion within 0.5 milliseconds.

Ronald E. Smith, president and CEO of Deep Down, stated that the company is capable of producing the Proteus design on a mass production scale. Prices quoted range from US$500,00 for smaller units to larger, US$1.5 million systems.

1.1.3 LDEO Project Management
Successful testing of most of the Schlumberger (SLB) wireline heave
compensation system (WHC) components for the JOIDES Resolution unit has
been completed and the final testing results of the Motion Reference Unit (MRU)
tests show that the system is operating within specifications.
Oversight of the
project is finished and we are currently awaiting a more defined shipyard schedule
for shipping and onboard installation of the WHC.
LDEO personnel are currently
working on cost to complete estimates for the vessel’s revised delivery date.
LDEO is also looking at adjustments to shipment schedules for all LDEO and
SLB equipment needs based on the lab space availability dates. LDEO personnel
have been exploring ways to provide additional resources and assistance for
delivery of science and shipyard projects.
