You won't be short. What happened in my case is that I sold 5000 shares from ETrade yesterday playing with their MM. Today they locked up the shares, made the 5000 a short position. They won't call me on the short, it's just their way of not allowing their customers to trade for a few days. But the jerks also locked up my cash as margin for the so called "short."

Ameritrade likes to lock up shares also. You can put in an order to see if they'll let what you have trade. If you don't really want to sell, then put the order in for some high amount like $1.
