The public preview is the same build as was released last September, so if the newsgroups are merely users discussing its shortcomings, I'm not sure that really gives an indication as to where things are (internally) as opposed to where things WERE, 8 months ago.

And it would seem to me that it isn't really in Microsoft's interest (you can argue that it is in AMD's interest) to announce an "intermediate beta" in 45 days, and an RC1 in 4 months, if they know they aren't going to meet those targets-- that's pretty near-term stuff.

EDIT: Another reason I expect the launch is coming sooner rather than later is the Microsoft 64-Bit "tour" beginning on May 5. If you click on the agenda, one of the items is the Microsoft product roadmap, so at any rate, a lot more information should be available in another 2 weeks:
