Get ready for War of 1812

Tallahassee doesn’t have a brew pub, but new beers are entering the marketplace at a furious pace. Almost faster than I can keep up with them. Good thing my tolerance remains strong. (My liver, too, but many thanks to those posting comments of concern to said organ.)

During the past fortnight, as best I can tell, an amber ale and two different brown ales have become available locally – from three different microbreweries no less. They are: War of 1812 Amber Ale, Brooklyn Brewing Brown Ale and Sweet Georgia Brown from Sweetwater in Atlanta.

This post is devoted to War of 1812.

It is on tap at Harry’s in the heart of downtown Tallahassee and may be found in some beverage centers too.

I don’t think it’s a great beer but it may be the perfect beer for Tallahassee. Let me explain. War of 1812 is a decidedly mild ale with less character than even the least aggressive pale ales. It is smooth and goes down easy, an altogether pleasant beer.

Local beer drinkers who are eager to expand their base but not necessarily eager to try bold or “adventurous” ales – I’m thinking Dogfish Head or Rogue offerings, not to mention those from Brewery Ommegang or Unibroue – should be happy with War of 1812.

It has body, but not too much body. It has flavor, but not too much flavor. Like I said, I think this is an ale made for the Tallahassee audience. It won’t make Fat Tire lovers stop yearning for their favorite concoction, but it should satisfy them for the time being.

What I especially like about War of 1812 are the stories behind the beer. It is contract brewed at Saratoga Brewing Co. in upstate New York for Sackets Harbor Brewing Co., an offshoot of the brewpub by the same name near the Thousand Islands region in New York.

Some of the brewpub’s owners were at the heart of the partnership that bought Funny Cide, the magical gelding that took the thoroughbred world by storm when it won the first two legs of the 2003 Triple Crown. They also produced a truly forgettable Funny Cide ale.

Tallahassee is the first location outside of upstate New York to have War of 1812, thanks to Moriah Murphy, a local woman who’s chief operating officer of 1812 South. I think she’s chosen her market wisely with this amber ale. May the force be with her.

Comments:

"Beer AND Star Wars? Man, you really are trying to make my day."

"As a part of the 1812 Ale team in Sackets Harbor, I think your comments on our excellent 1812 Amber Ale are well taken. When the beer was created 10 years ago, our brewmaster came up with several recipes that we tested on the local beer swilling inhabitants and the mild, easy drinking 1812 Amber was a unanimous winner. We will see that Moriah gets you some of our great "Hoppy" Thousand Island Pale Ale and other "craftier beers" we brew that may be more to your advanced beer tastes. 1812 Ale was designed to be "drinkable"!"

"I've had it; very "drinkable" as the poster before myself has so eloquently put it. Another great thing is the happy hour at Harry's on any given day from 2-7pm! 2 for 1 draft beers and the wings are to die for!"

"Excellent beer, it is also at Publix. Had some yesteday afternoon, mighty fine and well worth the price."

"I had it at Harry's and like it so much I brought friends back to try. Even my girlfriend the wine drinker enjoyed hers. Seemed like everyone else in the bar was drinking it to. Is there anywhere else in town to get it?"

"I was introduced to this beer after meeting Moriah Murphy the Chief Operating Officer. All I have to say is it's AWESOME!! I loved it! This is one of the finest tasting beers I've EVER had the pleasure of enjoying! I spoke to her for quite some time & learned about the brewery & a little history behind the Amber Ale. Well worth tasting & it won't be for everyone, but for me I'm sold!"
