Yes, you're right. But it costs money to acquire skillls, and with the cost of education soaring faster than the price of oil, and now the loans to acquire that education gone the way of the dodo, not sure how we're gonna pull that off.

What I don't quite understand is why my college, for example, which cost $10,500K a year in 1985 (and had the dubious distinction of being the most expensive college in the US at the time) now costs $45-$50K, even though most of the teachers aren't much better paid, tenure is actually harder to get, and 90% of the buildings and infrastructure were built and paid for before the 1920s...(and most buildings which have appeared since with rich alumni donations).

At least in Canada, the cost of an education ranges between $3000/year to $12,000 for a first rate school. Even Oxford University, when I checked a few years back, was $10,000 (dollars, not pounds) per year, if you qualified.

Not sure what is going on here that has created a situation where students must take on loans equivalent to a mortgage in order to get their degrees. This is something that we must address, and soon, imho.

Asia and the emerging markets are winning the skills battle. I know that in many of these countries, if you pass the entrance exams, you can attend state universities for free.

Time to get with the program, or risk a brain drain.
