The long and winding journey of Pilot Therapeutics will go forward with a new name, as officials with the Wake Forest University spinoff rechristen the company as Gene Smart Health.
The new name is meant to better convey the firm's technology in the field of nutrogenomics, or the study of how genetics affect the way human bodies respond to food, said Keith Wakeman, president of Gene Smart.
"'Nutrogenomics' is a great word in the science community, but it's also one that is kind of scary to consumers," Wakeman said. "We wanted a name that conveys what we do, but that is simple enough to work both in business-to-business and business-to-consumer environments."
Gene Smart is one of the early home-grown biotech companies in the Triad, based on research into treatments of chronic inflammatory ailments such as asthma and arthritis by Wake Forest University Professor Floyd "Ski" Chilton.
