Just received this in an e-mail. Can't say who it's from, so take it for what it's worth - to you. It is genuine:
NHLBI is still supporting research on 5HMF (5-hydroxymethyl furfural) as a potential antisickling agent for sickle cell disease, both through a small business grant to Xechem, Inc in New Jersey, and through the NIH RAID drug development program. I would say there is still some promise here, and the final word on this drug is not yet in.
While NHLBI does not support research on the natural product niprisan to the best of my knowledge, my understanding is that Xechem believes this is a beneficial drug and is marketing it for sickle cell disease in Africa. I refer you to Xechem for further information.
