Symantec Announces Industry's First Integrated, Comprehensive Gateway Security Appliance; Symantec Previews Symantec Gateway Security At RSA Conference 2002

CUPERTINO, Calif., Feb 19, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Symantec Corp. (SYMC), the world leader in Internet security, today announced Symantec Gateway Security, a highly integrated gateway security appliance that incorporates five core security functions into a single solution to effectively prevent security breaches at the network perimeter. This first-of-its-kind security offering combines firewall, gateway-level antivirus, intrusion detection, content filtering and VPN capabilities in a single, easy-to-use appliance to provide small and medium enterprises and branch offices of large corporations with cost-effective, secure protection against today's blended Internet attacks. Symantec Gateway Security appliances will be unveiled at the RSA Conference 2002 being held February 19-22 at the San Jose Convention Center. Symantec Gateway Security is scheduled to be available in March 2002.

The Symantec Gateway Security appliance offers customers a ready-to-deploy, complete network security solution designed to protect against all types of malicious threats, including new blended threats such as Code Red and Nimda. The appliance is also flexible enough to operate within current network environments as part of an overall multi-tier, multi-platform security plan.

"Small and medium enterprises and branch offices of large corporations are exposed to the same blended threats and hack attacks facing Fortune 500 organizations and often do not have the dedicated technical resources to manage a comprehensive network security system," said Gail Hamilton, executive vice president, Symantec Corp. "With its all-in-one functionality and ability to be managed remotely, the Symantec Gateway Security appliance offers customers superior, cost-effective network protection from a single security expert."

Symantec Gateway Security provides network security at the gateway between the Internet and a corporate network or between individual network segments. The integrated security functions are managed from a single graphical management console included with the appliance. Using the management console, administrators can manage local and remote appliances over the Internet including advanced configurations, rule sets and cluster parameters. The Symantec Gateway Security appliance provides customers with an ideal way to reduce total cost of ownership by eliminating the need to deploy and manage multiple security products manufactured by different vendors.

"Symantec Gateway Security addresses needs that every organization faces at its network perimeter," said Chris Ellerman, director of Security Practice, N2N Solutions, Inc. "The integration of industry leading and proven application-level firewalling, antivirus, intrusion detection, content filtering and virtual private networking technologies into one platform under a single management console will give organizations the ability to protect themselves from today's most common malicious Internet threats."

"The time and costs associated with acquiring, installing, configuring and managing multiple security products from a variety of vendors can be excessive," said Charles Kolodgy, Research Manager Internet Security Software for IDC. "Offering key security functions integrated into a single appliance means that IT staffs do not have to spend time familiarizing themselves with products from different vendors and do not have to maintain multiple service contracts."

Key Product Features

Symantec Gateway Security is a highly integrated network security solution that provides comprehensive protection by combining five essential security functions:

-- Firewall Security -- The integrated firewall component is
based on the Symantec Enterprise Firewall 7.0. This hybrid
firewall provides full-inspection application proxy technology
and automated system hardening to protect corporate networks
from today's blended Internet attacks.
-- Symantec's award-winning antivirus technology -- Carrier Scan
Server 2.2 detects malicious viruses, worms and Trojan horses
by protecting e-mail, file and Web traffic (SMTP, HTTP and
FTP) at vulnerable network gateways.
-- Internet Content Filtering -- Provides integrated URL
filtering that restricts access to Web sites deemed not
applicable to the organization's use of the Internet.
-- Intrusion Detection -- Integrated intrusion detection detects
network attacks, drops offending packets and automatically
notifies the firewall of an attack so that appropriate action
can be taken (IP black listing) with no human intervention
required.
-- IPSec Compliant VPN -- The integrated VPN component is based
on the Symantec Enterprise VPN 7.0. This VPN is uniquely
secure through its integrated proxy secured VPN technology
that ensures administrators can monitor traffic at the
application level, not just at the network level, which helps
to ensure that a customer's VPN does not become a backdoor
security hole.
-- Automated Updates -- Symantec's patented LiveUpdate technology
automatically downloads the latest virus definitions and
Intrusion detection attack signatures, improving security
while easing the administrative workload.
Performance and Scalability

The Symantec Gateway Security appliance can support some of the most demanding branch office bandwidth needs with standard throughput in excess of 50 broadband connections (calculation based on typical xDSL connection providing 512Kbps per connection). With the optional integrated high availability and load-balancing (HA/LB) feature, customers can cluster up to eight appliances to handle even higher loads. When appliances are clustered together, each node continuously monitors the other nodes and if an appliance should fail, the other appliances in the cluster pick up the failed nodes workload to continue to provide round-the-clock protection to the network.

Symantec Security Response ensures customers are protected with the latest updates and information available by proactively providing integrated response specifically matched to the technology offered in Symantec Gateway Security. Symantec Security Response is a team of Internet security experts who deliver solutions, services and response capabilities to Symantec customers worldwide, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The research centers are focused on collecting and analyzing the latest malware threats such as viruses and worms, as well as network security threats and vulnerabilities. Symantec's technical support experts provide customers with information on product implementation and usage, as well as countermeasures and identification tools for new threats. Symantec Security Response also provides time-sensitive security advisories using Web updates, alerting services, technical support and media alerts.

Symantec Gateway Security is a key part of Symantec Enterprise Security, which provides any size organization with the technology, global response and services necessary to manage its information security. Symantec's comprehensive solution offers best-of-breed products to protect gateways, servers, and clients with firewall security, virus protection, intrusion detection, vulnerability management and virtual private networking (VPN). Customers benefit from Symantec's global network of researchers that provide customers with around-the-clock, immediate response to any new security-related attacks. Symantec Enterprise Security customers are also supported by one of the largest professional security organizations in the world, offering security consulting, security education and managed security services.
