The thing is, in bear markets, we get oversold bounces.

Some I recall vividly:

August 3, 2000 to August 31, 2000
Jan. 3, 2001 to January 31, 2001.
April 4, 2001 to May 25, 2001.
Sept. 24, 2001 to Dec. 5, 2001.
July 24, 2002 to mid-August, 2002.

Note that most of these were 4-6 weeks long, with much of the appreciation coming in the initial thrust off the lows.
