3bar, in about 1983 a friend of mine and i were hiking the suburbs of Kyoto Japan, visiting temples. After awhile of hours we became lost in the many neighborhood houses and streets, all of which looked like alleys, we seeing only the houses garages connected to the next property by a 6 foot wooden fences to the next and that to the next house garage with its wooden fence. At that, we had come to a split. One alley-like road went one way, the other the other. We saw the signs but we could not read their script. There near us was a very old lady, walking, with a backpack on her back. She looked very worn and old, not dressed like she belonged at all in the neighborhood. We had instructions the hotel people had written for us in Japanese and in English. So we showed her our note. She pointed which way to go, to the left. She originally was hiking to the right. We of course then went to the left.

For a long time after that she followed us to the left, just staying out our easy access. About an hour later we got to the Temple entrance. At that point she kept now going down the road, into the distance.

I can still see her, today, clearly. I am sure, by now, her ancestors and cheribs and other followers too remember her vividly.
