Falluja is lost. For now.

(from DailyKos)

Marines are surrounding Falluja, as the US has completely lost control of the town.

The town erupted with the killing of four mercenaries. The US is promising an "overwhelming response", but we know what has happened every time the US has tried to "shock and awe" the Iraqis into submission.

It ends up killing a bunch of civilians in "colateral damage" and merely adds kindling to the fire.

The Marines will retake the city, whatever that means in a guerilla war. The question is not whether the Marines can "take territory", it's whether they can hold it. And in a city like Falluja, they can only hold it if they're willing to take heavy casualties. Sitting ducks, so to speak.

Not that they aren't already sitting ducks. Last month, 51 US soldiers died, the second-highest tally since Bush declared "mission accomplished".
