I probably don't understand this stuff as well as I should, but the increase in the Fed auctions to $100-billion from $30-Billion would indicate to me severe, unrealized impairment on the balance sheets of the major banks in the US.
While this is not a surprise, the method they are using to address it really is puzzling. It's like pushing on a string. It is like putting a Band Aid on one of those Monty Python flesh wounds.
