The main differences are time and language:

time: They started 2D codes long time ago when NFC was unknown. They spread technology widely and it cannot be replaced easily there. AD looks like will remain but context AD, ticketing, loyalty, navigation can gone to RFID/NFC. I do not say 2D codes will vanish completely, no. But we will have significant change in ratio. Also, EU plans to integrate RFID in EACH banknote. Then it be reality, RFID will be everywhere as price drops to nothing and quality steps to new level. Take into account that RFID/NFC much user frendly and much more interactive. They have next era online resources and services widely connected to QR; we have weak and poor services those do not take 2D codes into account.

language: they have "no alternative" as ierogliphic languages are not easy for 12 button phones. In our part of the world people use ASCII and local extensions very fast.

These are examples why this technology will be spontaneous for some years in EU and USA.

But in any case I will take part in it:)
