OT: Steele, not to be flip, but it kinda depends on what is meant by big or small. The site is an abandoned limestone quarry gussied up with pools, plants, koi, a few waterfalls, and originally referred to as the Japanese Gardens or Japanese Sunken Gardens before that WWII thing. Some of the stuff there probably dates back to Roosevelt's public work projects.

But worth a look if you're in town? Definitely, if for no other reason than it's right next door to the SA zoo, which is a very good one, also based in an abandoned limestone quarry area or theme format. This whole neck of the woods is one limestone quarry after another.

The Sunken Gardens itself can be done in 30-45 minutes max, unless you want to have a picnic lunch there, and the experience of same will depend a great deal on the city's budget at the time of your visit. Sometimes they've cleaned stuff up and sometimes they haven't. You never know.

But in general, yeah, a good off-the-beaten-track place to visit.

I live only 6, 7, or 8 blocks north of same, depending on how one defines a block, and would be happy to get together with you for a beer (or something more serious) if you're headed this way and so inclined.
