Re control: maybe. I know some people cannot stand to see other people having a conversation in which their norms and dogmas are at best regarded as not particularly insightful.

It is an easier path to try to ruin the fabric of the conversation than genuinely to question one's own beliefs or to set them forth in a coherent and persuasive fashion. Exposed to the light, a lot of the Limbaugh labelling type of commentary just turns out to be divisive and self-centred nationalism.

I think a lot of people have followed your political path. Sullivan is another example. These things happen slowly, of course. But a chunk of the intellectual/economic right has recognised the horror of what the nationalist, Christian fundamentalist right now is. And their influx into the Democratic party will surely influence the so-called left to become more economically practical.

One forward-looking guess: Colin Powell will sign up as Obama's Secretary of Defense.
