Note what is happening here: They are not figuring out which way the market will go. They are making the market go the direction they want.

No question this happens. E.g. Soros deployed more money breaking the Kiwi in the 90's than the NZ Central Bank had. And it undoubtedly happens often if there isn't hard data supporting a stock price and the only people on the other side are individual investors (e.g. generally not a good idea to play chicken with Buffett).

But that is different from what is often claimed by the conspiracy theorists - e.g. outright conspiracy between a reported and a hedge fund or that every single downgrade is part of the conspiracy.
