it's a case of events and state processing.

Probably the 'message seen' event doesn't occur until the entire page is 'displayed to the end-user'.

If that were the case, it would always be off by one....

however there is some sanity there.

if they reversed it to do the subtract by one first, and if the end-user's connection died (dial up), there is a chance the message would never be seen, yet the software at the server side would think the end-user saw it....
