Zetiq Cervical Cancer Study Tests Cancer Diagnostic

Zetiq Technologies has received regulatory approval from a local IRB in Israel for conducting a clinical trial to test the company's cancer diagnostic technology for detecting cervical cancer.

The initial study focuses on cervical cancer, but the technology offers a pan-tumor stain that can be applied to the detection of a wide range of cancer indications.

"Our technology offers a major breakthrough in the field of cancer diagnostics," said Dr. Adi Elkeles, CEO of Zetiq. "We are developing a tool that is simpler to use and more accurate than existing cancer diagnostics tools. In addition to being a pan-tumor stain, our technology also has a unique versatility which offers the exciting prospect of it being used both for cytological screening and histological diagnosis of many types of cancers," he added.

Zetiq's technology, known as CellDetect, uses color staining to differentiate between cancerous and normal cells.

Pre-clinical studies have demonstrated the technology to accurately detect cancer cells in various clinical samples, as well as in many cancer cell lines in culture, holding much promise to reduce by far the large percentage of false negative results associated with currently used diagnostic screening tools such as the PAP smear.

Results of the cervical cancer study are expected during the second half of this year.

The current US market for cervical cancer diagnostics exceeds $1 billion. In the US alone, more than 60 million PAP smears are carried out each year.
