Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (CY) Wednesday said it recently contacted Simtek Corp. (SMTK) to explore a potential acquisition of the company, according to a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Cypress currently holds a 19.3% stake in Simtek, a Colorado Springs, Colo., maker of semiconductor-memory products.

Cypress said the talks could result in a transaction in which it would obtain control of Simtek through a merger, acquisition of stock or in the purchase of a division of the company.

Cypress, which makes a variety of integrated circuits, originally purchased its stake in Simtek as part of a joint product development relationship between the two parties.

No further details were provided in Wednesday's SEC filing.

Shares of Cypress Semiconductor closed Tuesday at $21.13. Simtek's shares finished trading at $1.86.
