Tuesday January 22, 9:00 am ET
The HL6385DG Accelerates the Commercialization of the Miniature Display Industry Offering Single Longitudinal Mode and Continuous Wave Operation

TOKYO & SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Opnext, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPXT - News), a global leader in state-of-the-art laser technology, today announced the availability of the HL6385DG, the world’s first red laser diode with 640nm/150mW capabilities. The HL6385DG offers the highest optical output power and red color wavelength band available on the market. This technology breakthrough was accomplished by adopting a new development process that includes a new waveguide structure and optimized structural parameter.

Currently, UHP (Ultra High Performance) Lamp and LED’s are known as light sources for display. These light sources are thought to have better color reproducibility, higher efficiency, be smaller in size and lighter in weight. Laser diodes are small, lightweight, highly efficiency and have excellent color reproducibility because of a high level of monochromaticity. These highly suitable features strongly position laser diodes as a light source for next-generation display applications.

“Opnext is a global leader in high-performance optical components. Our technological achievements, such as this, set us apart from our competitors,” said Tadayuki Kanno, senior vice president, Opnext device business unit. “Next-generation miniature display opportunities will only continue to grow due to the consumer demand for mobile technologies.”

Opnext previously commercialized the 642nm/90mW Laser Diode, HL6366DG series for red light source for miniature display in January 2007. This newest red laser diode, a single longitudinal mode, 642nm/150mW laser diode, offers a more brilliant image display over the previous version. This new laser diode is suitable to be built into miniature display for personal computers, mobile phones and other mobile devices which make possible to get image information- anytime - anywhere.

Exhibiting at Photonics West 2008

Opnext will be located at Booth # 6181 at Photonics West 2008 held January 22-24, 2008, at the San Jose Convention Center, San Jose, California.
