The water needs of coal-fired plants can be augmented by the water removed (30%) by using K-Direct processing to upgrade low-rank coal at the plant immediately prior to combustion. This reduction in draw-down of water for power production benefits farms and municipalities that would otherwise compete with utilities for this resource. Especially important in the West, places like Texas that have abundant lignite reserves and often scarce supplies of water.
