trading in early january

I have seen a few things I had a nice run in drop right at the open today. I have noticed this as a pattern for me in early january.

I have a basic theory that what happens is small investors with large gains wait until the first trading day of the year to take profits because they won't have to pay the taxes for another 16 months.

Sort of an anti-january effect that would only effect microcaps since large investors have to pay taxes quarterly anyway.

So official theory is microcaps with large gains tend to shed some of them right at the start of trading on jan 2 as small investors worried about taxes wait until the new year to take some profits.

Anyone else observed this?
