(FORT Detrick, Md.) -- Dr. Connie A. Schmaljohn of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases has been elected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology. Schmaljohn is internationally renowned for her work on Hantavirus pathogenesis and medical countermeasure development.

Her election is an acknowledgement of the prestige with which she is considered within the scientific community. Members of the Academy, known as fellows, are elected through a highly selective, annual, peer-reviewed process, based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology,” according to the American Academy of Microbiology Web site.

Criteria to be elected a fellow include distinguished scholarly achievement in microbiology; an outstanding publication record; strong editorial board service; honorary, scientific, educational, clinical and professional achievement awards; significant professional service record; inventions; patents; and board certification
