Ahura Scientific Announces Record $2.6M National Guard Order

FirstDefender Identified as Key Equipment in Domestic Terrorism

Wilmington, MA — November 14, 2007— Ahura Scientific, Inc., a leader in handheld systems for chemical identification, today announced a major order from the National Guard Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Teams (WMD-CSTs). After an extensive evaluation, FirstDefender was selected for deployment to all WMD-CSTs nationwide based on its unique features including hand portability, identification of mixed chemicals and certified MIL-STD 810F ruggedness.

A total of 65 instruments and fiber-optic extension probes will be delivered, valued at $2.6M. Each of the 55 WMD-CSTs will receive one instrument, with the remaining ten units deployed to the U.S. Army Chemical School for training and to the Consequence Management Support Center .

Numerous federal agencies including the U.S. Army, U.S. Customs and Immigration, U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are actively using the product, along with more than 150 other agencies in North America, Europe and Asia . Independently tested by the U.S. Army’s Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) and NSERP-approved, FirstDefender is available via federal and state grants, the New York State HIRE contract, the GSA schedule and CEDAP.

Created in 1998, the Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Teams (WMD-CSTs) are the nation’s premier chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN) response element. Today, 55 WMD-CSTs are ready 24 hours a day to rapidly deploy, identify threats and assist local and federal emergency responders in the event of a terrorist attack.

The mission of WMD-CSTs is to support local and state authorities at domestic WMD/NBC incident sites by identifying agents and substances; assessing current and projected consequences; advising on response measures; and assisting with requests for additional military support. The teams ensure that strategic national interests are protected against chemical, biological or radiological weapons. The WMD-CSTs are a key element of the Department of Defense's overall program to provide support to civil authorities in the event of an incident involving weapons of mass destruction in the United States .
