Creating your own nest egg is a fairly new concept for the "masses" here in the U.S. Over the last 15 years or so there has been a transformation to this structure because of the competition from foreign goods comming into the country.
The USA is way ahead of any other contry in that aspect. Most other developed countries still have the pension structure deeply rooted in their respective companies.
