...by the way, there are a few great places to volunteer:
1. Churches. They are always looking for help, especially the big ones that may be running SQL Server or other databases and applications.
2. At your current company. Step out and volunteer on the side to do something technical for guys in the office. That's how my brother broke into IT.
3. Check out craiglist and other job sites for companies looking for developers who want to take an equity stake instead of getting paid. If all else fails, you have something real to put on your resume.
You may already be in IT though, so this may not matter.
