Plans for a pipeline capable of carrying about 4 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas from Alaska to North American markets were announced Friday by ConocoPhillips.
The Houston petroleum company said it's "prepared to make significant investments, without state matching funds, to advance this project as part of this proposal."

ConocoPhillips spokesman Charlie Rowton said the company's best estimate for the cost of the entire project, including the pipeline from Alaska's North Slope to Chicago, is between $25 billion and $42 billion, according to an Associated Press report.
ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP - News) said during the initial phase of the project, San Francisco-based Bechtel Oil, Gas and Chemicals Inc. will provide engineering and technical support and other related project services.
